U17 Girls win at Baltimore March Mania
Sara Lands scores a brace to make it back to back tournament wins
The South Jersey Banshees Under 17 Girls won their group at the March Mania Tournament in Baltimore this past weekend, which comes on the back of a tournament win at the Bethesda Thanksgiving Tournament.
The girls opened the weekend with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Soccer of Columbia SAC United Fury Premier (MD).
The girls started off sluggish but were able to open the scoring in the second half as Shelby Lyon got the ball into a wide position where she beat a defender and was able to find the on rushing midfielder, Carly Kliment, at the top of the box, who calmly placed the ball into the back of the net for her first goal since joining the team. To secure the shut out the team needed a great save from Jessica Figueroa (pictured right) early on goal line clearences from Gabby Kuhar and Jackie Holtzman.
The girls lost the next match of the day 2-1 to Norwin SC NSC Storm (PAW) but clearly dominated the game. A team from their division dropped out so there was no third game in the group but through the tiebreaker the girls advanced to the finals.
In the finals the girls overcame the previous days defeat and injuries to win the game in convincing fashion 2-0. Early on with the wind at their backs, Patriots FC 93 (NYE) had a number of corners the Banshees dealt well with but after that initial 15 minute spurt they dominated all over the field. Sara Lands (Pictured Left) scored both goals in the victory.
The girls deserved and earned the honor to call themselves tournament champions.
